Summary

Apopka High in Apopka, FL, is a large traditional public high school serving 3,446 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Orange County School District. This school stands out for its exceptional graduation rate of 97.5%, which significantly exceeds both the district and state averages, but it also faces a major challenge with chronic absenteeism affecting nearly 45% of students.

The school shows a clear pattern of academic strengths and weaknesses. Students perform well in Biology 1 (79% proficiency) and US History (75% proficiency), matching or exceeding district and state averages. However, Algebra 1 proficiency is alarmingly low at just 32%, compared to the district average of 63%. This creates an interesting paradox: Apopka High excels at getting students to graduate but struggles to ensure deep mastery of foundational math skills. Nearby Legacy High Charter, a much smaller school with only 215 students, dramatically outperforms Apopka in every academic subject and has a chronic absenteeism rate of just 20.8%, highlighting how school size and structure may impact student engagement.

With a student-teacher ratio of 25.3:1, Apopka High has larger class sizes than comparable nearby schools like Lake Brantley High School (22.9:1) and Wekiva High (22.1:1). Its per-student spending of $8,126 is the lowest among nearby schools with available data, yet schools with higher spending don't necessarily achieve better results. The school's primary challenge appears to be its high chronic absenteeism rate, which likely contributes to its academic struggles. To improve, Apopka High would benefit from targeted attendance interventions and more individualized support in foundational subjects like Algebra 1, potentially through smaller learning communities or mentorship programs.

Open Quote Horrible experience so far. Enrollment took them 6 weeks to process, schedule has been a disaster and the violence my daughter sees every day is horrific! She is being targeted and was vested by a group of kids. Teachers and resource officers don’t care and don’t do anything! Close Quote
