Summary

Louise R Johnson K-8 School Of International Studies in Bradenton, FL, is a public PK-8 school serving 844 students in the Manatee district, and it stands out as a high-performing school that delivers exceptional academic results, particularly in middle school and advanced math, despite serving a predominantly low-income population.

This school’s biggest strength is its middle school program, which rivals the best in the region. For example, 8th-grade math proficiency is an impressive 82%, far above the district average of 64% and the state average of 61%. In advanced math, the school truly shines: Algebra 1 proficiency is 87% (compared to the district’s 58%), and Geometry proficiency is a perfect 100% (compared to the district’s 47%). This is a clear advantage over nearby schools like Manatee Charter School, which scored 83% in Algebra 1 and 82% in Geometry. The school also boasts a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 12.6%, less than half the district rate of 29.4% and far lower than nearby schools like Samoset Elementary School (35.3%) and Manatee Elementary School (39.1%). This suggests a highly engaged student body and a positive school culture.

While the elementary grades are solid, the school does have a notable weakness in 5th grade, where math and science scores dip below district and state averages. However, the overall picture is one of a school that provides a rigorous, consistent K-8 pathway, especially strong in STEM. With nearly 70% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, Johnson is a powerful example of high performance despite economic challenges, and it does so with efficient spending ($12,891 per student) compared to lower-performing neighbors like Ballard Elementary School ($15,311). For parents seeking a strong middle school with a focus on advanced academics, this school is an excellent choice.

Open Quote The school has a bullying problem. Kids say racists stuff all the time. I got jumped, smacked, hair pulled, and pushed all by the third quarter. Also some of the teachers say stuff that is inaccurate all the time. Mrs. Grim, and Mr. Thompson however have really good classes, and I learned a lot this year in them. Close Quote
