Summary

Mt. Dora Middle School in Mount Dora, FL, is a public school serving 845 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Lake district, which ranks 32nd out of 70 districts in Florida.

This school presents a unique mix of strengths and challenges. On one hand, it excels at accelerating top students in advanced math, with 79% proficiency in Algebra 1 and 91% in Geometry End-of-Course exams—far exceeding district and state averages. However, this success does not carry over to grade-level math, where only 24% of 7th graders are proficient, the lowest among all nearby schools like Umatilla Middle School (38%) and Tavares Middle School (42%). A major concern is chronic absenteeism, which affects 44.2% of students—significantly higher than the state average of 31.4% and comparable to Eustis Middle School (49.1%). Additionally, the school spends only $9,255 per student, the lowest among all comparable schools, and has a student-teacher ratio of 20.4:1, the highest in the area.

These factors suggest that while Mt. Dora Middle School can effectively support its advanced learners, it struggles to provide a strong foundation for the majority of its students, particularly in 7th-grade math. The high absenteeism rate is a critical issue that likely undermines academic progress across the board. Compared to Umatilla Middle School, which has similar demographics but better performance in nearly every metric, Mt. Dora’s challenges appear to be school-specific, pointing to potential areas for improvement in culture, leadership, and instructional strategies.

Open Quote Worst administration and the most moronic VP I have ever dealt with! Completely incompetent and has no business whatsoever being in any position of authority! Thank God my son is in the 8th grade and only has a few months left or I'd be moving him to another school! Worst experience I've ever had with him or my other 2 older children! If you possibly can avoid it, do so! Close Quote
