Summary

Newsome High School in Lithia, FL, is a large, high-performing public high school serving 3,157 students in grades 9-12 within the Hillsborough County School District, and it stands out as a top-tier school in the state with a consistent history of academic excellence.

Newsome is a clear academic leader in its area, ranking 91st out of 838 high schools in Florida for the 2025-2026 school year, placing it in the 89th percentile. This elite ranking is far ahead of nearby traditional public schools like Durant High School (ranked 359th) and Riverview High School (ranked 281st). The school boasts an exceptionally high graduation rate of 98.6%, nearly 6 points above the state average, and a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 17.7%—dramatically lower than the district average of 31.3% and nearby schools like Bloomingdale High School (38.5%). Students consistently outperform district and state averages in nearly every subject, with standout proficiency rates in English Language Arts (84% in 9th grade) and US History (94%).

One interesting finding is Newsome's efficiency: it achieves these top-tier results while spending significantly less per student ($7,693) than its peers, such as Bloomingdale ($9,381) and Brandon High School ($9,139). However, the school faces strong competition from the nearby charter school Bell Creek Academy, which ranks higher (61st) and outperforms Newsome in several subjects, including Algebra 1. Newsome's Algebra 1 proficiency rate (49%) is notably below the state average (63%), a puzzling weakness for an otherwise high-performing school. While Newsome's state ranking has slightly declined from a peak of 57th in 2021-2022, its graduation rate and test scores remain very strong, making it a premier educational choice in the Lithia area.

Open Quote My son transferred to Newsome from a private school. We were nervous about our decision at first as we had never used a public school before, but now have no regrets. He loves school, is on the honor roll & has honor/AP classes, and is doing very well. He has a lot of great teachers and enjoys his classes. We would definitely recommend Newsome HS! The only drawback would be the difficulty level of getting in touch with someone in the guidance dept., which seems very overwhelmed with a large student- management workload. Close Quote

Open Quote We moved here largely based on the schools here. Newsome High School is totally different that what is read on the internet. I would not recommend this school. The academic program is not challenging enough and my two children thought it was easier than the school from which they were previously enrolled.

The guidance staff is very uncooperative as well as the registar and counselors. It took me two weeks to originally register my kids from school. When my son missed the first two days of school this year because he was hospitalized, they automatically withdrew him. He has now missed the first six weeks of school partly because of their incompetence. I have been trying to get him in a homebound program which usually takes 2-3 weeks. It has been two weeks and they have been sitting on the paperwork. They do not know the proper procedures for this program although they are supposed to be "professionals". The secretary in the guidance office needs to go to ediquette school and learn some manners. He is very unprofessional as well.

Newsome also has a major drug problem as well as the adjacent neighborhood. This is the reason my son is not in school. Given his mental state, it would be determental for him to return. Even though they have a sheriff's deputy on school grounds at all times, it doesn't stop the flow of drugs in the school.

My son was an honor student last year although he was not in any honors classes. They would not put him in any because of the class size amendment Florida has so he was bored. This year he had three honor classes but hasn't been able to catch up on his studies because of their incompetence.

There are several other high schools in this area as well as private schools. I would look at those schools before enrolling your kids at Newsome. Close Quote
