Summary

Symmes Elementary School is a public school in Riverview, FL, serving 410 students in grades PK-5 within the Hillsborough district, an area where families have many school choices nearby.

Symmes has experienced a sharp decline in recent years, dropping from a 3-star rating in 2022-2023 to a 1-star rating for 2025-2026. This is a stark contrast to its closest neighbor, Winthrop Charter School (0.55 miles away), which consistently earns 4-star ratings. A key concern is that Symmes spends a high amount per student ($14,597) and has a very low student-teacher ratio of 12.5:1—the lowest among nearby schools—yet these resources are not translating into academic success. For comparison, Winthrop spends far less ($8,245 per student) with a much higher ratio (23.4:1) but achieves top-tier results. This suggests potential issues with how resources are used or the effectiveness of instruction. Another major red flag is chronic absenteeism, which has risen dramatically to 35.0% in 2023-2024, well above the district and state averages, and nearly double that of Winthrop (18.9%).

There is one bright spot: Symmes’s 5th-grade Science proficiency was 57% in 2024-2025, outperforming the district and state, and was the highest among traditional public elementary schools in the area. However, academic performance across other grades is inconsistent, with 4th-grade Math (61%) and ELA (56%) scores significantly higher than 5th-grade Math (42%) and ELA (44%). This "roller coaster" pattern suggests that a child’s success may depend heavily on their specific teacher rather than a cohesive school-wide curriculum. For parents considering Symmes, it is important to weigh the school’s high spending and small class sizes against its recent performance decline and growing absenteeism challenges.

Open Quote My son being going here for years now. He is currently a patrol (5th grader) at Symmes. Very proud to served and prouder as his parents! Symmes is a VERY GOOD school. They do care about your kids grades and WILL go out of their ways to help your children succeed. Any issues that you have, just bring it their attentions, they immediately took care of it.
