Summary

Rodgers Middle Magnet School in Riverview, FL, serves 900 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Hillsborough school district, which ranks in the 36th percentile statewide.

Rodgers Middle Magnet presents a striking contrast in student performance. On one hand, the school excels at accelerating top students into high school-level math, with 93% of students proficient in Geometry and 81% in Algebra 1 on End-of-Course exams—far exceeding district and state averages. On the other hand, grade-level math proficiency is critically low, with only 29% of 7th graders meeting standards in FAST math, which is 24 points below the state average. This "tale of two schools" suggests resources may be heavily focused on the magnet program's advanced track, leaving many students behind. Civics proficiency is also a persistent weakness, with just 57% of students proficient compared to 77% statewide. Nearby Randall Middle School, a high-performing school in the area, shows how different outcomes can be when attendance and engagement are strong.

The most critical issue at Rodgers is an alarmingly high chronic absenteeism rate of 47.2%—nearly 16 points above the district and state averages, and more than double the rate at Randall Middle (16.0%). This crisis likely drives the school's overall academic struggles, as nearly half of students miss significant instructional time. Even compared to other magnet schools, Rodgers stands out negatively: Progress Village Middle Magnet has a 28.3% absenteeism rate and a 3-star rating. Spending per student ($9,961) is higher than at Randall Middle ($8,469), indicating that funding alone isn't the solution. Without a dramatic intervention to improve attendance and support for grade-level learning, the school's downward trend is likely to continue.

Open Quote My daughter has been the target of several racial slurs from other students and the Vice Principal told her there was nothing she could do. My daughter defended herself against a Caucasian female student who continually harassed her and threatened her but the school only suspended my daughter and 50 minority students who created a circle around the fight. The Caucasian female was not reprimanded at all. The school is racist and treats Caucasian students like Gods. Close Quote

Open Quote The small school environment lets the teachers and administration know everyone. Very positive communication with the teachers who spend their own lunch time giving extra tutoring when asked. Close Quote
