Summary

Riverview Elementary School is a public school in Riverview, FL, serving 444 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Hillsborough district, which ranks in the bottom half of Florida districts.

This school stands out for its high spending and low academic results. Riverview Elementary spends $16,385 per student, which is significantly more than nearby schools like Sessums Elementary School ($10,779) and Winthrop Charter School ($8,245), yet its test scores are below district and state averages. The school has recently dropped to a 1-star rating, a decline from its peak performance nearly a decade ago. A major concern is the extremely high chronic absenteeism rate of 37.4%, which is much higher than the district average (31.3%) and dramatically higher than high-performing nearby schools like Riverview Academy Of Math And Science (16.5%) and Winthrop Charter (18.9%). This attendance crisis has persisted for three years and is likely a key driver of the school's academic instability.

Despite having the lowest student-teacher ratio (12.8:1) among nearby traditional public schools, Riverview Elementary shows inconsistent academic performance from year to year and grade to grade. For example, 5th grade math proficiency dropped from 67% to 43% in just two years. The school is located within a mile of two 4-star schools—Winthrop Charter and Riverview Academy of Math and Science—which have lower poverty rates and much lower chronic absenteeism. This suggests that families with options may be choosing other schools, leaving Riverview Elementary with a more challenging student demographic. The school's high investment in small class sizes is not translating into academic gains, especially when compared to schools like Sessums Elementary School, which achieves better results with less funding and a higher student-teacher ratio.

Open Quote My daughter just finished first grade at Riverview. This was our first experience with a Florida school, and the staff was amazing. They are very helpful and communicate well. They listen to all concerns you might have and help you make a plan. My daughter had huge academic gains once she enrolled at Riverview, thanks to her wonderful teacher and all efforts she put in. Open Quote My son started as a kindergarten student and is now finishing the first grade. I have found the school to be 100% supportive in all ways. His teachers have kept me informed of test scores and provide daily communication. The new principal has welcomed parents to many open-house events. I do not have enough praise for the faculty. My son is doing very well in reading and I have his hard-working teachers to thank! Close Quote
