Summary

Madison Middle School in Tampa, FL, is a public school serving 658 students in grades 6-8 within the Hillsborough district, where over half of the student body (56%) comes from low-income families. The school has faced significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom third of Florida middle schools over the past decade and earning a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its most pressing issue is an exceptionally high chronic absenteeism rate of 39.9% in the 2023-2024 school year, which is far above the district and state averages of about 31% and more than double the rate at nearby high-performing schools like Coleman Middle School (15%) and Wilson Middle School (16%).

Academically, Madison's test scores are consistently below district and state averages across most subjects. For example, only 39% of 8th graders were proficient in English Language Arts in the 2025-2026 school year, compared to 57% in the district and 60% statewide. However, the school shows a notable strength in its advanced math program: 76% of students taking the Algebra 1 End-of-Course exam were proficient, well above the district and state averages of 63%. This creates a "two-schools" dynamic where the general education program struggles—with 7th-grade math proficiency dropping as low as 8% in recent years—while the accelerated math track excels.

Interestingly, Madison's per-student spending of $10,193 is in the middle of the pack among nearby schools, meaning funding alone isn't the primary issue. The school's challenges are starkly highlighted by its proximity to Coleman Middle School, just 1.5 miles away, which is a 5-star school with a 13% low-income rate and 15% chronic absenteeism. On a positive note, there are modest signs of improvement in English Language Arts, with 6th-grade proficiency rising from 36% to 56% over three years, suggesting recent literacy interventions may be starting to work. Ultimately, addressing the attendance crisis appears to be the most critical step for Madison to improve its overall performance.

Open Quote OMG!! After relocating to the area my child was sent to this school due to our home address. I Read some reviews saying good this school was ,well big mistake!! The day he was enrolled there was someone being put onto a police car in front of the school! Next the staff were running around like chickens with their heads cut off, no one could give me help or information on my child's classes. The children answer the phones then don't know how to respond properly. MY son was told he needed gym shorts (which by the way I was never informed of) and because he didn't have them was to walk the track. No information given on anything on the first day!! I could see the concern in my child's eyes. I will be waiting til I can fill out a application to enrolled my child somewhere else in the spring time. This was a huge mistake putting him in this school! All I can say to the parents please really do the research. I based my choice by the reviews I read and boy were they wrong!!!! Close Quote
