Summary

Gorrie Elementary School is a high-performing K-5 public school in Tampa's historic Hyde Park neighborhood, serving 498 students and consistently ranking among the top elementary schools in Florida. For parents, the most important takeaway is that Gorrie delivers exceptional academic results, with proficiency rates between 80% and 88% across all subjects—far exceeding the Hillsborough district average of 55-61% and the state average of 60-66%. This performance is backed by a decade of top-tier rankings in the 95th percentile or higher, though a slight dip to the 95th percentile in 2025-2026 (from 98th the year prior) is worth monitoring.

What truly sets Gorrie apart is its stability and efficiency. The school has an exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 11.2%, compared to the district's 31.3%, and a very low poverty rate (14.86% of students eligible for free/reduced lunch). Nearby schools like Washington Elementary (78.62% poverty) and West Tampa Elementary (76.8%) face much higher challenges. Gorrie also spends less per student ($11,547) than many lower-performing peers, suggesting strong parental support and fundraising supplement the budget. While other high-performing schools like MacFarlane Park Elementary Magnet and Mitchell Elementary also excel, Gorrie consistently outperforms them in most subjects, making it a standout choice for families seeking a proven, well-resourced academic environment.

For parents comparing options, Gorrie's combination of elite test scores, low absenteeism, and efficient spending creates a strong foundation for student success. However, it's worth noting that the school's performance is closely tied to its affluent community, and families should consider whether this environment aligns with their values. Nearby magnet schools like Rampello K-8 Magnet School and Channelside Academy Of Math And Science offer alternative programs that may appeal to different needs. Overall, Gorrie remains a top-tier choice for elementary education in Tampa, with a track record that speaks for itself.

Open Quote We're new to the area and had heard wonderful things about Gorrie - any reservations we may have had were quickly alleviated! The Principal and VP are very involved. They have a wonderful relationship with the teachers and parents. The KG teachers are all very good and we were extremely happy with the way classes were conducted. I would highly recommend this school! Close Quote
