Summary

Brooksville Elementary School is a PK-5 school in Brooksville, FL, serving 687 students within the Hernando school district, where the majority of students (64.63%) qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

This school has a notable strength in 4th-grade math, where 61% of students were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year, matching the district average and coming close to the state average. However, there is a significant and persistent drop in 5th-grade math proficiency, which fell to just 39%—a 22-point decline from 4th grade and the lowest score among all comparable elementary schools in the district. This pattern has been consistent for three years, suggesting a systemic issue with the 5th-grade math curriculum or instruction. In contrast, 5th-grade science is a bright spot, with 54% of students proficient, showing strong improvement from 35% two years prior. Chronic absenteeism is a severe challenge, with a rate of 32.0% in 2023-2024, which is higher than the state average and directly impacts academic progress.

For context, just 8.9 miles away, Challenger K-8 School Of Science And Math is a 5-star school with a 93rd percentile ranking, a chronic absenteeism rate of just 14.3%, and a much lower poverty rate. This comparison highlights how socioeconomic factors and school culture are deeply intertwined with outcomes. Brooksville Elementary’s per-student spending ($11,158) is in the middle of the pack, suggesting that funding is not the primary issue. The school’s leadership would benefit from investigating why 4th-grade math and 5th-grade science are succeeding while 5th-grade math struggles, and replicating those successful strategies to address the critical math cliff.

Open Quote I don't even know if the administration or faculty communicate clearly between each other, as faculty is terrible at parent communication. The previous school year it took me 4 times of emailing and calling before I finally was able to request a teacher conference. I taught elementary, middle and high school for 10 years and never have I experienced such poor communication and lack of awareness from faculty members. COVID notwithstanding, many of these teachers are not instructing online classes so I do not understand why it's such a challenge to establish open and transparent communication. I am seriously unimpressed with this school. It's no surprise its rating has fallen over the past 3 years, along with average assessment scores. It doesn't seem that BES supports faculty or students & families enough, nor does it seem like the school administration cares to. Sad. Thank goodness my child has fun otherwise and is able to make friends here. Soon we will be moving and will be able to enroll our child in a private school. Close Quote
