Summary

Achieve Academy At McMillian is an alternative school in Pensacola, FL, serving 260 students in grades K-12 within the Escambia school district, where over 82% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school serves as a specialized intervention center for students who have not succeeded in traditional settings, and its metrics reflect the profound challenges these students face. Academic proficiency rates are near zero across most subjects—for example, 0% in Algebra 1, Geometry, and 10th-grade ELA—with the highest rate being just 16% in Civics. The graduation rate is critically low at 9.7%, and chronic absenteeism affects 86% of students, meaning most miss 10% or more of the school year. These numbers are drastically lower than district and state averages, highlighting the extreme barriers to learning, such as homelessness, family instability, or involvement with the justice system.

Interestingly, the school spends a high amount per student—$19,514 annually—yet outcomes remain low, suggesting that resources are necessary just to maintain basic operations and safety. A stark contrast exists with the Escambia Virtual Academy Franchise, another alternative school in the same district that boasts a 100% graduation rate, high test scores, and only 0.5% chronic absenteeism. This comparison shows that the "alternative" label can mask vastly different student populations. There is a glimmer of hope in early grades, where 3rd-grade proficiency reached 17% in 2023-2024, suggesting that foundational skills exist but are lost as students progress, likely due to compounding absenteeism and other challenges.

Open Quote Three students returned to our school after a sojourn at Camelot Academy. All have proven to be excellent students who are making a contribution to our student body. One, focused on earning all As, graduated this summer. Another will be graduating next year. And finally, a freshman came to us from Camelot and made Student of the Month! Very positive reflection of Camelot Academy. Close Quote

Open Quote Camelot is an alternate school for students that have some behavior problems or get in trouble at school. The program is made to help kids with those kinds of problems and it does a very good job of that. It doesn't have football, cheerleading, home ec or PE, but it does the same academics as the regular schools. It is real strict and a safe enviroment and it zeros in on the issues that get kids in trouble. It helps them do better when they go back to their own schools. Close Quote
