Summary

Longleaf Elementary School in Pensacola, FL, is a mid-sized school serving 545 students in grades PK-5 within the Escambia County School District, where 68% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school stands out as a relative "bright spot" in a cluster of low-performing schools, including Ensley Elementary School, Brentwood Elementary School, and Oakcrest Elementary School, which all rank in the bottom 10-15% of Florida. While Longleaf has historically been a 1 or 2-star school, it is showing signs of improvement, with its best state rank in three years and a sharp drop in chronic absenteeism from 39.3% to 27.9%, now lower than the district average of 33.5%.

The most notable differentiator for Longleaf is its exceptional 3rd-grade English Language Arts (ELA) performance, with 75% of students proficient in the 2025-2026 school year—18 points above the district average and 15 points above the state average. This is a massive outlier compared to nearby schools like Bellview Elementary School (67%) and Oakcrest Elementary School (22%). However, the school faces a "3rd Grade Peak" pattern, where students excel in early grades but decline significantly in 4th and 5th grades—for example, math proficiency drops from 71% in 3rd grade to 40% in 5th grade. This suggests the school is effective at getting students to grade level early but struggles to sustain growth as the curriculum becomes more complex.

Comparing Longleaf to nearby schools like Beulah Elementary School (3.6 miles away) and Pine Meadow Elementary School (3.8 miles away) reveals stark differences. While Longleaf is a 2-star school, Beulah is a consistent 3-star school, and Pine Meadow is a top-tier 4-star school. The key factor appears to be socioeconomic status: Pine Meadow has the lowest free/reduced lunch rate (42.4%) and highest test scores, while Longleaf (68%) and lower-performing schools like Ensley Elementary School (65%) have higher poverty rates. Per-student spending does not correlate with performance—Longleaf spends $11,130 per student, while high-performing Pine Meadow spends less ($10,064) and low-performing Lincoln Park Elementary School spends the most ($14,647). Overall, Longleaf is on a positive trajectory, with improving test scores, declining absenteeism, and a strong early literacy program that makes it a more stable option in its area.

Open Quote We are from out of state and I am very displeased with the school as well as the school system. My son was in gifted serv. program back home and now that we moved here his grades have dropped. It is taking forever to get him in the program here and the attitudes that i'm getting from the staff is that we are a joke. That my son isnt has smart as I say or his previous school says. The work is crazy easy and my son has already completed the math that they are working on. His grades have dropped and no one seems to care except for me. The teacher is rude and acts as though i am bothering her if i call to disscuss my son. Close Quote

Open Quote The staff and teachers are sweet (most teachers!). Principal is approachable. PTA is more active this year. The classes my girls have been in have been quite controlled and a good learning environment. However, the curriculum changed last yr (while we were out of country), and this is new for us now. I do not like the new curriculum near as much, and find some of the homework (1st grade) at times hard for ME! It is harder, and I have seen my kids more discouraged than before, and not excelling as easily. Their grades have gone down a small bit. This does change the atmosphere of the school. Before this change I would rate this school a 5, but now its a 3 to me. Close Quote
