Summary

Coral Reef Montessori Academy Charter School is a K-8 charter school in Cutler Bay, FL, serving 521 students within the Miami-Dade school district. The school follows a Montessori philosophy, which emphasizes self-directed, project-based learning, and serves a highly affluent student population—only 3.65% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, compared to an average of about 61% at nearby schools. However, the school has seen a steady decline in its state ranking over the past decade, dropping from a 4-star rating (76th percentile) in 2016-2017 to a 2-star rating (40th percentile) for the 2025-2026 school year.

A unique "V-shaped" academic performance profile sets Coral Reef Montessori apart. In upper grades (6-8), students consistently outperform district and state averages—for example, 8th-grade ELA proficiency is 87% (vs. 65% district) and 8th-grade Math is 81% (vs. 65% district). End-of-course exams in Algebra 1 (94%) and Civics (87%) are also exceptionally high. Yet in lower grades (3-5), the school significantly underperforms, with 5th-grade Math at just 43% (vs. 67% district) and 5th-grade Science at 30% (vs. 59% district). This dramatic improvement between 5th and 6th grade may reflect the Montessori method's focus on critical thinking and independence, which could translate into stronger performance on more complex assessments in middle school.

Compared to nearby charter school Somerset Academy Silver Palms, which serves a much higher-poverty population (85.87% free/reduced lunch) yet achieves a 4-star rating with lower per-student spending ($8,960 vs. Coral Reef's $13,099), Coral Reef Montessori's spending does not appear to translate into a competitive academic advantage, especially in elementary grades. Chronic absenteeism has also risen sharply, from 10.9% in 2019-2020 to 20.6% in 2023-2024, which could further impact foundational learning. For parents considering this school, the Montessori approach may offer unique benefits for middle school students, but the declining performance in lower grades and high student-to-teacher ratio (20.8:1) are important factors to weigh.

Open Quote This small school is a gem. The class room lessons are individualized to accommodate each students level. The individualized style of teaching helps each student excel at their own pace. This school's no sugar policy teaches students at a young age about eating healthy. They have a great gardening and music program. There are many afterschool activities -soccer, violin, orchestra, chest, etc. The afterschool program is held right in the students own classroom. The parents are encouraged to be involved -and most of the parents are very involved. My daughter has excelled greatly in this school. She is above expectation in all the subjects. Most importantly, my daughter loves going to school. She is excited about all her lessons and has incorporated a lot of her lessons at home. Close Quote
