Summary

George Washington Carver Middle School in Coral Gables, FL, is a public school serving 941 students in grades 6-8 within the Miami-Dade district, and it stands out as an academic powerhouse with a consistent top-2% ranking in Florida for over a decade. This school achieves remarkable results, with proficiency rates of 93% or higher in every subject and grade tested for the 2025-2026 school year, placing it 20th out of 1,216 schools statewide. In contrast, its nearest neighbor, Ponce De Leon Middle School, ranks 698th, highlighting a dramatic performance gap within the same city. Even high-performing charters like Somerset Academy Charter Middle School (South Miami Campus) and International Studies Charter Middle School cannot match Carver's across-the-board excellence, as they show dips in specific areas like 8th-grade science or ELA.

A key differentiator is Carver's exceptionally low chronic absenteeism rate of 3.5%, which is nearly eight times lower than the district average of 28.2% and nine times lower than the state average. This rate is dramatically lower than Ponce De Leon Middle School's 27.5%, signaling strong student engagement and a positive school culture. Additionally, only 12.96% of Carver students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a much lower percentage than nearby schools like Mater Brickell Academy Middle (63.24%) or Shenandoah Middle School (59.55%). This unique socioeconomic profile, combined with its elite performance, suggests Carver attracts families highly focused on academics.

Interestingly, Carver's success is not driven by higher spending, as its per-student expenditure of $10,755 is lower than several lower-performing peers, including Ponce De Leon Middle School ($12,659) and Mater Brickell Academy Middle ($12,906). This points to effective resource allocation and a strong curriculum as the true drivers. The school's consistency—with every test score between 85% and 100%—indicates a system of excellence that leaves no subject or grade behind, making it a top choice for families seeking a stable, high-achieving middle school environment in Coral Gables.

Open Quote I just graduated this year from Carver, and while some of the kids aren't up to par as you'd expect, the curriculum is. The teachers are great, the classes aren't too big so kids have more teacher-student interactions, and you can literally talk to your teachers about ANYTHING. And with the International Studies/Education program, we keep up with the rest of the schools around the world, which is "above average" in the US. Close Quote
