Summary

Coconut Palm K-8 Academy in Homestead, FL, is a large public school serving 1,159 students from Pre-K through 8th grade within the Miami-Dade school district, where a majority of families qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The school is facing a serious academic crisis, with proficiency rates in core subjects like 3rd grade ELA (37%) and 8th grade science (28%) falling well below state and district averages. This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Air Base K-8 Center For International Education, where 83% of 3rd graders are proficient in ELA. A major driver of this struggle appears to be an exceptionally high chronic absenteeism rate of 35.8%, which is over five times higher than that of high-performing neighbors like Somerset Academy Silver Palms (6.8%). Interestingly, the school shows a puzzling split: while overall performance is very low, it achieves 100% proficiency in Biology 1 EOC exams, suggesting a small, high-performing group of students may be masking the challenges faced by the majority.

This decline is not new—the school’s state ranking has been steadily dropping for nearly a decade, now placing it in the bottom 6% of Florida elementary schools. The problem is not a lack of funding, as schools with much better outcomes, such as Somerset Academy Silver Palms At Princeton, spend less per student. The most urgent priority for Coconut Palm K-8 Academy must be a comprehensive strategy to drastically improve student attendance and learn from the successful practices of its high-performing peers in the area.

Open Quote My goodness! having to leave 1 star just to write a review really is insane. The only thing good about this school is Mrs. Quesada, and Mrs. Vargas (4th grade). The principal all she cares about is the school reputation, and likes to be fake in front of parents, acting like she actually cares for the kids. There were a few incidents back to back I tried to get ahold of her for to get to the bottom of it, and no answer. My son was treated horribly several times by cafeteria ladies not once did she call me back or respond to the several emails I'd sent. Every day in school there were constant fights, and constant bullying. If you're from a Hispanic background or white background, PLEASE STAY AWAY. YOUR CHILD WILL GET TREATED UNFAIRLY, being as they will be the minority. Unfortunately this is how the school runs, and everyone knows it. Thing is know one says a word because of how our times are. I REGRET THE DAY I put my son here! The ladies in the front desk, are the rudest, and they don't even know what's going on with the school at times. You ask a question, they leave you on hold and then hang up. Please, stay away from this school, your child will come home crying! Close Quote

Open Quote Both of my kids have gotten an excellent education at this school. My daughter graduated in the top ten of her class here. My son is currently enrolled in the gifted program also doing very well. I've had good interactions with teachers every year. They go beyond to make sure kids are advancing in all areas of development. I believe with strong parent interaction your child can excel anywhere. Close Quote

Open Quote Principal Dr Cary is very unprofessional. And doesn't know how to talk to her students. Instead of guiding her students the right way she bashes them and puts fear in their hearts and minimizes them. Close Quote
