Summary

Ben Gamla Charter School is a K-8 school in Hollywood, FL, serving 360 students within the Broward school district, and it consistently ranks in the top 20% of elementary schools in Florida, earning a 4-star rating. This school stands out for its exceptional academic performance, particularly in math, where 5th-grade proficiency rates reached 88%—a remarkable 19 percentage points higher than the district average and 26 points higher than the state average. Despite serving a relatively low-income population, with 34.17% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, Ben Gamla outperforms the district and state in nearly every subject, all while maintaining a low student-to-teacher ratio of 13.3:1 and spending just $8,364 per student, which is significantly less than nearby schools.

What makes Ben Gamla particularly interesting is its cost-effectiveness compared to other schools in the area. For example, Colbert Elementary School and Oakridge Elementary School spend more than double per student—$18,657 and $19,382, respectively—yet achieve far lower academic results. Even when compared to high-performing peers like Beachside Montessori Village, Ben Gamla offers a more intimate learning environment with a lower student-to-teacher ratio (13.3 vs. 17.2) and at a significantly lower cost ($8,364 vs. $12,049). This efficiency makes Ben Gamla a compelling option for families seeking a high-quality education without the higher price tag.

However, the school has a notable volatility in chronic absenteeism, which dropped from 20.8% in 2021-2022 to a remarkably low 5.9% in 2022-2023, only to spike back to 21.2% in 2023-2024. Despite this, academic performance has remained strong, suggesting resilient instruction. Additionally, Ben Gamla shares an address with its North Campus, which is on an upward trajectory, jumping from the 72nd percentile to the 92nd percentile in recent years. For parents in Hollywood, Ben Gamla stands as an academic island of high performance in a sea of struggling schools, making it a critical educational asset for the community.

Open Quote A school should have enough space for the kids to sit in classes that they can see the board and the teacher. A student should not feel like if he talks during lunch he will be punished. A parent should not feel like the principle is doing him!
This principle takes pride in knowing everyone's name, but not a bit concerned for their feelings or well beings of the students or the teachers. Teachers should not be made to feel abused for doing their jobs.

all of this happens at Ben Gamla and much more. Ask former students and former teachers that are now not scared to voice their opinions and concern for your child.

your child deserves better! Close Quote

Open Quote I have my daughter going here for 3rd grade. We moved from Maryland over the summer and we were hoping that a charter school would be better then a public school.
Unfortunately we were wrong. I'm not sure if it's the state of Florida or the school but they do not push the students. What she was doing in first and second grade in Maryland public schools she is just starting here. I'm pretty shocked because I now feel that she is going to be behind other states in-terms of education. The only thing they added to third grade seems to be science which she didn't have too much of in 2nd grade in Maryland but the Math, Reading and Social studies subjects she is doing now in third grade are at first and second grade level in Maryland.
