Summary

Sawgrass Springs Middle School in Coral Springs, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 946 students in grades 6-8 within the Broward County School District, and it has a solid academic track record with a consistent 3-star rating over the past decade.

This school truly excels at accelerating top students into advanced high school coursework, with exceptional performance on End-of-Course (EOC) exams. For instance, 95% of students are proficient in Geometry, 89% in Biology 1, and 78% in Algebra 1—all dramatically higher than district and state averages. However, this strength creates a "tale of two schools" dynamic: while advanced students thrive, the general student body struggles significantly with grade-level math, particularly in 8th grade where only 33% are proficient (compared to 61% statewide). This 62-percentage-point gap between advanced and on-grade-level math performance is the school's most striking challenge. On a positive note, Sawgrass Springs has consistently low chronic absenteeism (30.5% in 2023-2024), which is better than both the district and state averages, indicating strong school culture and family engagement.

Compared to nearby schools, Sawgrass Springs sits in a competitive cluster. It significantly outperforms struggling schools like Margate Middle School and Silver Lakes Middle School, but it falls short of the top-tier Westglades Middle School (a 5-star school with 90th percentile ranking) in nearly every subject. The school's free/reduced lunch percentage has dropped dramatically from 56% to 32% in recent years, suggesting a changing demographic profile, yet overall state ranking has remained flat. With per-student spending of $11,667—higher than Westglades' $9,116—Sawgrass Springs has resources to work with, but its main challenge is closing the performance gap between its advanced and general student populations, especially in 8th-grade math and science, to move from a solid 3-star rating to a consistent 4 or 5-star performer.
