Summary

Silver Lakes Middle School in North Lauderdale, FL, is a public school serving 729 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Broward district, where 59.4% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Florida middle schools over the past decade, currently sitting at the 25th percentile, which places it in the lowest tier of school performance.

A standout challenge is chronic absenteeism: 33.4% of students were chronically absent in the 2023-2024 school year, a rate dramatically higher than nearby Margate Middle School (2.3%) and Somerset Academy Riverside Charter Middle School (9.8%). This attendance crisis likely contributes to the school's low grade-level proficiency, such as 28% proficiency in 8th-grade science and 35% in 6th-grade math, both well below district and state averages. However, Silver Lakes shows a surprising strength in advanced coursework: students taking End-of-Course exams in Biology 1 (86% proficient), Geometry (83%), and Algebra 1 (75%) outperform district and state averages. This creates a "tale of two curricula," where a select group excels while the majority struggles.

Interestingly, the school spends $11,828 per student, higher than top-performing neighbors like Ramblewood Middle School ($10,719), yet results lag. A compelling comparison is North Broward Academy Of Excellence Middle, a charter school less than a mile away with a higher low-income population (76.68%) that outperforms Silver Lakes in nearly every metric, ranking in the 69th percentile. This suggests that addressing chronic absenteeism and expanding successful advanced-course strategies could be key levers for improvement at Silver Lakes.

Open Quote This school is okay, but the students need to learn proper edicate. Many are disrespectful, rude, and very disruptive.. The teachers are okay, many are nice though. The bathrooms have gotten a lot since last year. Ms. Lopez, amazing prinicple!! You can tell she really cares about her school, students, staff, ect. Now teachers..I wish they would do a teacher training to maybe help them rephrase their sentences to help the students in their class feel more comfortable.. The school's lunches are disgusting. I really hope that it improves. Michelle Obama ruined it. You can't make cheap food healthy!! They need to give us our fried corn dogs back. They have salad options, you cannot force someone to your healthy lifestyle!! Close Quote

Open Quote I went here for three years and they have been the best three years of my life. Teachers here bend-backwards for their kids to succeed. I've never been to another school like this one. It's amazing. Close Quote
