Summary

Sheridan Technical College in Hollywood, FL, is a small, high-performing magnet high school serving 543 students in grades 9-12, and it consistently ranks among the top 5% of all high schools in Florida. This school stands out dramatically from its neighbors, achieving academic proficiency rates that are often double or triple those of nearby comprehensive high schools. For example, in 10th Grade English Language Arts, Sheridan Technical College scored 91% proficient, compared to just 46% at Hollywood Hills High School and 51% at McArthur High School. This exceptional performance extends across all subjects, including Biology 1 (92% proficient) and Algebra 1, and is supported by a very low student-teacher ratio of 10.8:1, which is far smaller than the 20:1 to 27:1 ratios found at larger schools like Nova High School.

The school’s focused "technical college" model, which combines rigorous academics with career-oriented training, appears to be a powerful formula for success. Sheridan Technical College has achieved a near-perfect graduation rate, reaching 100% in recent years, and its state ranking places it in the 95th percentile, while its closest physical neighbor, Hollywood Hills High School, ranks in the 27th-32nd percentile. This stark contrast is a vivid example of school choice in action, as both schools are located on the same street less than a mile apart. However, the school does have a notable area for improvement: its chronic absenteeism rate of 24.1% in 2023-2024, while much lower than the 50%+ rates at surrounding comprehensive schools, is still higher than the 21.7% rate at its high-performing peer, McFatter Technical College.

While Sheridan Technical College’s per-student spending of $13,855 is higher than most neighboring schools, its high performance is not solely due to a larger budget, but rather how resources are allocated toward smaller class sizes. The school is part of the Broward district, which is ranked 23rd out of 70 districts in Florida. For parents considering this school, the data clearly shows that Sheridan Technical College offers an elite academic environment with exceptional test scores and graduation rates, though families should be aware of the moderate chronic absenteeism rate and the competitive, selective nature of the program.

Open Quote Staff and teachers have created a welcoming learning environment for high school students here. Classes are set up similar to college style and equipped with state of the art technology. Our teachers plan their lessons that encourage students to engage in the class topics. We are similar to a small private school setting. I enjoy working here and coming to school each day.
