Summary

Bair Middle School in Sunrise, FL, is a public school in the Broward district serving 672 students in grades 6-8, with nearly half of its students coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Bair Middle School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Florida middle schools, currently holding a 1-star rating at the 29th percentile statewide. This places it significantly behind nearby schools like Indian Ridge Middle School (66th percentile) and Nova Middle School (65th percentile). The school struggles in core subjects, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (54-58%) and math (37-57%) well below district and state averages. A particularly concerning area is 8th-grade science, where only 27% of students are proficient—nearly half the state average of 52%. Even Westpine Middle School, located just 2.51 miles away, outperforms Bair in nearly every subject despite serving a similar community.

Despite these challenges, Bair shows notable strengths. The school excels in advanced coursework, with proficiency rates of 91% in Biology 1, 84% in Geometry, and 78% in Algebra 1—all well above district and state averages. This suggests the school effectively prepares its top students for advanced classes. Additionally, 7th-grade math is a bright spot, with 57% proficiency exceeding the state average of 53%. Chronic absenteeism, a persistent issue, has improved significantly after peaking at 31.4% in 2023-2024. However, the school spends $11,996 per student, higher than many higher-performing peers like Indian Ridge ($9,351), indicating that funding alone isn't the solution. The path forward likely involves scaling the successful strategies from advanced courses and 7th-grade math to benefit all students.

Open Quote Bair Middle School, located in Sunrise, FL offers many programs to cater to the needs of the diverse population including; Linking Education and Employment Outcomes (LEEO), Junior Advanced and Digital Academy (JADA), Gifted Education in Mathematics (GEM), Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM), SECME after school Club, and Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC).

We live in a “data driven" society that is directed mainly by the use of multimedia. Careers in technology and or technology related are the most desired, sought after high-wage, high-demand careers. Bair middle school, is ensuring that their students are prepared for success in the technology field. Mr. Clock, who runs the LEEO program at Bair Middle School, had 95% of his first cohort of students SY 14-15 successfully pass an adult industry certification exam, and earn their industry certification in PowerPoint. Being that LEEO is a new program to Bair, that these were strictly sixth graders who participated, and that the actual test is really an "adult" assessment, this was a spectacular accomplishment. The program is now in the second year of implementation. The first cohort of students now have PowerPoint Certification and 97% of them have Microsoft certification, as well. The second cohort of students SY 15-16 have completed their PowerPoint Certification with a 98% success rate.

For SY 14-15 100% of students in the JADA program completed at least 1 online class and many students earned additional high school credits. Although SY 15-16 is still happening, the same students from the 14-15 SY are now working on completing their 2nd online class and for some it is their 3rd or even more online class. In addition this same group of students, 7th graders now, are working on completing high school classes not online, right on Bair's campus to include; Biology, Algebra I, and Spanish I. Bair is the only middle school in Broward to offer this unique acceleration opportunity that can be completed at each student's unique learning pace.

Bair just became the first middle school in Sunrise, FL to be a magnet middle school. Starting SY 16-17, Bair Middle School will be offering Broward County Public School Students the option of being in a Montessori Magnet.

Open Quote My child is happy going to Bair MIddle School and I am happy sending them there. I was unsure at first because of things I had heard in the past...the thing is all those things I heard are from the past! Currently Bair is a B school and the admisitration and staff are conintually improving, doing it what it takes and reaching for the A! They have great academic programs with STEM, LEEO and JADA to offer along with sports, clubs and growing parental involvement. I would recommend Bair to anyone with a middle school aged child.
