Summary

Harbordale Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, FL, is a mid-sized public school serving 494 students from Pre-K through 5th grade, and it stands out as a consistently high-performing option in a neighborhood with significant educational disparities. Part of the Broward County Public School District, Harbordale has earned a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger for ten consecutive years, with state rankings that have remained remarkably stable in the 77th to 88th percentile. This consistency is a major selling point for families, especially when compared to nearby schools like Riverland Elementary School or North Fork Elementary School, which show much more volatility in their performance.

What truly differentiates Harbordale is its exceptional academic performance relative to its spending and student demographics. The school significantly outperforms both district and state averages in nearly every subject, with particularly strong results in early literacy and math—82% proficiency in 3rd-grade English Language Arts and 89% in Math, compared to state averages of 60% and 66%. This is achieved with a moderate spending level of $12,085 per student, which is far less than struggling schools like Thurgood Marshall Elementary School ($17,414) or North Side Elementary School ($17,400), yet Harbordale’s results are far superior. The school also boasts a low chronic absenteeism rate of 23.8%, well below the district average of 33.6%, which is a stark contrast to nearby peers like Sunland Park Academy (54.9%) and Walker Elementary School (79.9% free/reduced lunch).

While Harbordale is an excellent choice, it is not the top-performing school in its immediate area—Bayview Elementary School and Virginia Shuman Young Elementary School rank higher. However, Harbordale offers a stable, high-quality education that far outpaces the cluster of struggling schools to its north and west. One area for attention is 5th-grade science, where only 48% of students were proficient in the 2025-2026 school year, a drop from the previous year and below the district average. Overall, Harbordale represents a smart, reliable choice for families seeking a strong academic foundation in a supportive environment.

Open Quote I can’t say enough good things about this school. The principal is fantastic and has been there forever. The teachers often stay their entire career. It’s like a family. Close Quote

Open Quote I've been a parent of a student at Harbordale for two years and it's been a great experience. The school is on the smaller side, but it makes it feel more familiar. Most of the staff know my child's name and she knows theirs. Parent Involvement/Volunteering is amazing and provides additional learning resources for the kids that the State does not fund. The teachers we had so far, were great at what they do and I feel my child learned more than some of her friends at other schools. Close Quote
