Summary

North Side Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, FL, is a small public school serving 266 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Broward County School District, and it has recently achieved a remarkable academic turnaround that sets it apart from many nearby schools.

North Side’s most striking feature is its explosive academic growth. After years of low performance, the school jumped from a state rank of 1,825 (19th percentile) in 2022-2023 to 596 (73rd percentile) in 2025-2026, earning a 4-star rating. This leap of over 1,200 positions is the most dramatic positive shift among all comparable schools in the area. For example, while nearby North Fork Elementary School and Dillard Elementary School hold 3-star ratings, North Side is the only school in its immediate peer group to achieve 4 stars. Its 5th graders particularly shine, with 86% proficiency in math and 78% in science—far exceeding district and state averages, and even surpassing the scores of high-performing neighbors like Virginia Shuman Young Elementary School in math. The school also invests heavily in its students, spending $17,400 per pupil, which is significantly more than the district average and schools like Bayview Elementary School ($12,412).

Despite these successes, North Side faces a notable challenge: a chronic absenteeism rate of 39.9% in 2023-2024, which is higher than the district and state averages. This is a stark contrast to schools like Bayview (18.2%) and Virginia Shuman Young (16.4%), which have much lower absenteeism. The school is achieving strong results despite this hurdle, suggesting that if attendance improves, performance could climb even higher. Additionally, while 5th-grade math and science are standout subjects, 5th-grade English Language Arts proficiency (58%) lags behind the district (67%), indicating a need for more consistent instruction across all grades. Overall, North Side’s story is one of a school defying expectations through effective leadership and targeted interventions, making it a compelling option for families in the area.

Open Quote Taught for two weeks and left. These kids don't respect anyone. They talk back to teacher, fight in front of teachers. I am surprise they are not ranked lower because they have 4th graders that read at Pre-K levels. Administration does not care, just move on to next thing. Close Quote
