Summary

Robert L. Stevenson Elementary School in Merritt Island, FL, is a top-tier public school serving 481 students in grades K-6, and it consistently ranks among the best in the state, placing in the top 2% of all Florida elementary schools. This school stands out dramatically from its neighbors, with academic proficiency rates that are often 20 to 30 percentage points higher than the district and state averages. For example, in the 2025-2026 school year, 6th graders achieved a stunning 98% proficiency in both math and English Language Arts, while nearby Lewis Carroll Elementary School, the next highest-performing school in the area, saw rates around 91% in the same subjects. Stevenson also excels in science, with 89% of 5th graders proficient, far outpacing the Brevard district average of 64%.

What makes Stevenson particularly impressive is its efficiency. Despite spending the least per student ($10,717) among nearby schools, it achieves the highest academic outcomes. In contrast, Mila Elementary School spends over $18,000 per student but ranks in the bottom quarter of the state. This suggests that Stevenson’s success is driven by strong family support and a highly effective school culture, not just funding. The school also has exceptionally low chronic absenteeism at just 6.3%, compared to the district average of 21.1% and rates exceeding 34% at schools like Fairglen Elementary School and Endeavour Elementary School.

An interesting pattern at Stevenson is a "6th-grade spike," where students in that grade perform significantly better than their 5th-grade peers, suggesting a particularly strong teaching team or curriculum. While the school’s state ranking has slightly declined from its peak of 6th in Florida in 2015-2016 to 45th today, it remains an elite institution. The school serves a relatively affluent community, with only 16% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, a figure much lower than nearby schools like Cambridge Elementary Magnet School (70%) and Emma Jewel Charter Academy (77%). For parents seeking a school with exceptional academics, high engagement, and efficient use of resources, Stevenson is a standout choice.

Open Quote Horrible school!! It is more of a prison than it is a school. Don't be fooled by the high test scores either. The school forces any low performing student out prior to the 3rd grade FCAT's. Students are belitttled by the Principle on a daily basis. He, Mr. Corneau, singles out these little children in front of the other kids, and makes an example of them to scare the other kids to follow his laws. The school has a strict "closed door" policy and will not let visitors, parents, or anyone else into the school without being very, very carefully monitored.

It is the "School of the Arts" yet there is absolutely no artwork displayed throughout the school. They constantly are asking for money, but the funds they receive are not utilized to enhance the education of the children. I could go on for hours. The board of education is aware of the corruption at the school, but they choose to turn the other cheek to it.

I wanted to write this for the sake of any person who may be considering sending their child to Stevenson in the future. I've heard many people say that the parents who complain about this school simply have children who can't "keep up" academically. A more appropriate description should be that anyone, student or parent, who is a leader, should not attend this school. They do not want strong individuals. The school will break down your child and clone him or her to their beliefs. This looks good in quick observations, the hallways are quiet, the kids are all in line, and they all look the same. But if you listen carefully, and look hard enough, you will see tears in the children's eyes. You will also see entire classes being punished and humiliated because of the actions of one or two classmates. There is absolutely zero positive reinforcement. They simply bully, embarrass, and abuse the children in the school.

Please, look into other options for your child/children. You will be glad you did. Close Quote
