Summary

John F. Turner Senior Elementary School in Palm Bay, FL, is a public school serving approximately 600 students in grades PK-6 within the Brevard School District, and it faces significant challenges that set it apart from nearby schools.

The most pressing issue at Turner Elementary is its critically high chronic absenteeism rate of 34.7%, which is far above the district average of 21.1% and higher than every other nearby school, including Riviera Elementary School (31.2%) and Jupiter Elementary School (31.2%). This absenteeism is strongly linked to the school's widespread academic underperformance, as Turner consistently scores below its neighbors in nearly every subject. For example, in 5th grade science, only 41% of students are proficient, compared to 75% at Riviera, and in 3rd grade ELA, proficiency is 43% versus 73% at Riviera. The school also has a high rate of economic disadvantage, with over 72% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, the highest among its immediate peers. Despite spending $11,753 per student—more than top-performing charter schools like Pineapple Cove Classical Academy At Lockmar ($9,129)—academic outcomes remain low, suggesting that factors like school culture and instructional strategies are critical.

There is one bright spot: 6th grade math proficiency improved to 56% in 2025-2026, up from 31% the previous year, which is much closer to the state average of 60%. However, the school's overall trajectory is declining, with its state ranking dropping from the 36th percentile in 2020-2021 to the 16th percentile in 2025-2026. For parents, this means Turner Elementary is a school in urgent need of strategic intervention, particularly to address absenteeism and boost academic performance, while nearby schools like Riviera Elementary School and Pineapple Cove Classical Academy At Lockmar offer stronger academic outcomes.

Open Quote Turner is an amazing elementary school. It had the best teachers when I went there myself in the 80s and still do 30 years later now that my children go to the school. They communicate well and are very supportive of the children. Close Quote
