Summary

Chin (John Yehall) Elementary is a standout K-5 public school serving 233 students in San Francisco, consistently achieving top-tier academic results within the San Francisco Unified district.

The school's performance is truly exceptional, with over 83% of students proficient in English and 78% in math, far exceeding both district and state averages. What makes this achievement remarkable is that Chin Elementary serves a student population where over 75% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, yet it ranks in the 98th percentile statewide for serving students from similar economic backgrounds. This success sharply contrasts with nearby schools like Spring Valley Elementary and Redding Elementary, which have comparable poverty rates but significantly lower proficiency scores.

A key factor in this success appears to be an extraordinary school culture, evidenced by a chronic absenteeism rate of just 1.7%—a fraction of the district's 28.8% average. The school has maintained this high level of performance for over a decade, achieving strong outcomes even when compared to a local charter school, The New School of San Francisco, which serves a less economically disadvantaged population. Chin Elementary demonstrates that effective teaching and a supportive environment can lead to outstanding student success, regardless of background.

Open Quote Test scores not worth the mistreatment...
The high test scores and discipline both seemed appealing to us when we chose JYC, but our Kindergartener was repeatedly backed into a corner and threatened by JYC staff. Our child learned to fear teachers and administrators and learned to stop asking questions. My wife and I both have Masters degrees and we found the environment oppressive for an inquisitive child.
