Summary

Gage Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 698 students in the San Diego Unified district, showing a strong and consistent decade-long trend of improvement in its statewide ranking.

Academically, Gage outperforms both district and state averages in all core subjects, with particularly notable success in supporting its Hispanic student population, and has made dramatic improvements in reducing chronic student absenteeism since the pandemic. However, when compared to its three closest district peers—Green Elementary, Dailard Elementary, and Benchley/Weinberger Elementary—a significant performance gap exists, with Gage trailing by 17 to 22 percentage points in English and math proficiency despite similar per-student funding.

Conversely, Gage performs favorably against many schools in neighboring districts like La Mesa-Spring Valley and Santee, often matching or exceeding their results. Key areas for attention include enhancing science instruction and addressing a recent decline in performance for students in special education, while the school can build on its proven strengths in improving attendance and its effective support for specific student groups.

Open Quote My daughter attended K-5 at Gage and struggled in all subjects. Shortly after transferring to middle school, her grades shot up and she showed much more interest in doing homework. I'm shocked that she was taught to say "goed" and "comed" as if such lazy conjugation is acceptable anywhere in the English-speaking world. Before the days' classes, Gage has a "running club" where all the kids run around in a big circle to tire them out so the kids will be easier to handle. While that might help with the problem children, I'm sure it diminishes the performance of smart kids. Also, the Navajo/Lake Murray area has become full of Section 8 welfare housing that brings inner-city problems to a formerly suburban-type neighborhood. I can't recommend Gage. Close Quote

Open Quote This is my neighborhood school, and I am so happy that we decided to attend Gage! Prior to enrolling my daughter in the new Spanish Immersion program last year and actually getting to know the parents, staff, and students, I was wary of Gage. I had heard negative things about it from people whose children do not/did not even attend the school. It seems worth noting as well that when a person has a perceived negative experience, he/she is MUCH more likely to head online and write about it than when one has a positive experience. Over the past year I have spent quite a bit of time in various classrooms and gotten to know many of the students and teachers, and I have only ever witnessed thoughtful instruction, thorough lesson plans, and engaging classroom environments. I also appreciate that Gage is more ethnically and socioeconomically diverse than some of the surrounding schools; it seems as well that the immersion program is bringing together students from around the district and neighboring districts who otherwise may not get to interact.
