Summary

Canyon View Elementary is a highly-rated K-5 public school serving 505 students in the Poway Unified School District in San Diego, consistently earning top marks for its strong and stable academic performance.

The school excels in mathematics, where 76% of students are proficient compared to 37% statewide, and shows remarkable strength in supporting specific groups of students, including male students, Hispanic students, and those in special education. It operates efficiently, achieving excellent results with moderate per-student spending, and has successfully reduced chronic student absences since the pandemic. While overall performance is high, there is a noted drop in math scores in 5th grade that the school may be addressing.

Context is key: Canyon View is part of a high-performing district where all nearby Poway Unified schools like Sundance Elementary and Park Village Elementary rank in California's top tier. This contrasts sharply with neighboring schools in the San Diego Unified district, such as Hage Elementary, which spend more per student but have significantly lower proficiency rates, highlighting a strong district-wide advantage.

Open Quote Do not expect this school to stand by their character statements. My child was bullied and harassed at school by several boys at one time. She was devastated. I asked the school to address my issues and I was completely and totally dismissed. I am extremely disappointed and saddened, but now I know that my child will not receive any backing from the adults at her school when they cannot control or properly deal with harassment from other children. Open Quote This school has big problems right now. The amount your child will learn from grades 1-5 will depend upon whether they get a "good" teacher or a "bad" teacher. Parents have been asking for changes and accountability from teaching staff and administration since the middle of the 2011-2012 school year. District staff is aware of the problems here, but up until this point, has been unwilling to get actively involved. In our 5 years here, my child has had 2 years where he/she has not learned much - in fact, Language Usage test scores went backwards during one of these years. I spent numerous hours helping my child with homework because the lessons were not being taught in the classroom. Communication between the teachers and parents is extremely poor, and you get one opportunity each year for a formal parent/teacher conference. I am hopeful that the teachers will make some changes for the 2012-2013 school year based upon parent feedback - if there aren't any, I will be pulling my child out and will either request an inter-district transfer to one of the 3 other schools that feed into our middle school or will be homeschooling.
