Summary

Cambridge Elementary is a K-6 public school serving 415 students in the Orange Unified district, located in a high-need community where a large majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with student proficiency in English, math, and science falling well below both district and state averages; its statewide ranking has also declined sharply in recent years to the bottom 12th percentile. While chronic absenteeism has improved, it remains higher than the district average. Notably, other nearby schools with very similar student demographics, such as Taft Elementary and Handy Elementary, achieve substantially higher academic results, indicating that community characteristics alone do not determine school performance.

The school's recent performance drop is concerning, yet there are some positive foundations, including a notable reduction in chronic absenteeism from previous highs and historical data showing past effectiveness with certain student groups. Compared to higher-performing neighbors like La Veta Elementary and Palmyra GATE Magnet, Cambridge Elementary spends a similar amount per student, suggesting that how resources are used may be a key area for improvement to help students succeed.

Open Quote Cambridge is a wonderful school. we were leary about sending our son there because of rumors from neighbors, but having faith and not listening to the gossip proved to be good. The staff are excellent and there is a great sense of community.
the school is in need of more parents that want to help make Cambridge the best it can be.
Very happy we are part of this school for the next 5 years. Close Quote
