Summary

Fred C. Beyer High is a public high school serving grades 9-12 to about 1,600 students in Modesto, California, and is part of the Modesto City High district, where it consistently performs above the district average in key areas.

Academically, Beyer stands out for its strong English Language Arts program, with over 62% of students proficient, which is significantly higher than the district average and nearby schools like Modesto High and Peter Johansen High. The school also maintains an excellent 93% graduation rate and has a notably low rate of chronic student absenteeism at 18.7%, which is better than most district peers. While math and science scores are above the district average, they are an area for growth compared to the state. The school has shown particular strength in supporting English Language Learners and Hispanic students, though performance for Asian students has been lower in recent years.

When compared to other local schools, Beyer performs very well within its district context. Its closest academic peer is James C. Enochs High, which ranks slightly higher overall and has even better attendance, but Beyer spends more per student. Beyer's performance is notably stronger than other comprehensive high schools in the Modesto City High district with similar student populations. The school provides a clear contrast to alternative options like the Robert Elliott Alternative Education Center, highlighting its role as an effective, mainstream comprehensive high school.

Open Quote Bullying is a major problem at this school. The administration, many teachers and students bully. The administration is apathetic and ineffective at stopping it, in fact their rules help to perpetuate the situation. They ensure that all students know that there must be 2 witnesses for any report to be made about a bully situation. Bullies are usually smart and either bully in front of friends who are in on it, or they bully away from spectators. Even when done in front of teachers, especially the band teacher, nothing is done. The teacher says that he cannot do anything to help. Band members continue to drop. I have removed one student from the school for bullying. I may remove my other due to apathy and bullying by teachers who are uncaring of student needs with respect to medical issues. This used to be one of the best schools in Modesto, CA. I have two happy graduates from the school's glory days, but it is currently a bully haven. Close Quote
