Summary

William Jefferson Clinton Middle is a public middle school serving 622 students in grades 6-8 in the Los Angeles Unified School District, located in a high-need area of central Los Angeles where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with test scores in English, math, and science well below district and state averages, placing it in the bottom quarter of all California middle schools. A major concern is chronic absenteeism, with about one in three students missing too much school, which is higher than at most nearby schools like John Adams Middle. However, the analysis reveals some relative strengths: its math scores are notably higher than several other local district schools, including John Muir Middle and George Washington Carver Middle, and it has shown impressive recent improvement for its English Language Learner students.

The school's situation presents some notable contrasts. It spends more per student than almost all comparison schools, including nearby charter schools like Synergy Kinetic Academy that have stronger academic results and much lower absenteeism. Furthermore, John Adams Middle, located less than half a mile away and serving a very similar student population, achieves significantly better academic outcomes and attendance, indicating that factors beyond demographics are at play. Performance varies widely among different student groups, with a critical need for improvement for African American students, while the school has demonstrated it can make positive progress in specific areas.
