Summary

Short Avenue Elementary is a highly-regarded K-5 public school with 414 students in the Los Angeles Unified district, known for its strong academic performance and exceptional student attendance.

The school stands out for its rapid and impressive improvement, now ranking in the top 15% of all California elementary schools. Its test scores in English, math, and science are consistently higher than both the district and state averages, and it competes favorably with the highest-performing schools in the area, such as Coeur D'Alene Avenue Elementary. Perhaps its biggest strength is a chronic absenteeism rate of just 10.3%, which is less than half the rate of the local district average and significantly better than most neighboring schools like Stoner Avenue Elementary (24.3%) and Grand View Boulevard Elementary (20.5%). This focus on daily attendance provides a solid foundation for learning and is a key driver of the school's success.

Short Avenue achieves these excellent results efficiently, spending less per student than several nearby schools with lower performance. The school is effective for all student groups, with those from low socioeconomic backgrounds ranking in the 90th percentile statewide. While the school excels in early grades, there is a slight dip in 5th-grade scores, presenting a focus area. Overall, within a competitive landscape that includes options like Ocean Charter, Short Avenue Elementary has established itself as a top-tier, transformative choice for families.

Open Quote This neighborhood school is a gem! This is our second year at Short Avenue Elementary and my son is reading far above average in the first grade. We absolutely love the principal and the teachers who are all dedicated and fantastic at preparing the students to excel beyond elementary. I have been told that the teachers from the middle schools look forward to the students from Short Avenue Elementary because they end up being the leaders in their middle school classes. I am continually pleased to learn more great things about how the school is adding more enrichment for the students with a new Planet Bravo technology/coding program that just started this semester. I look forward to being more impressed with my son's exponential growth from this wonderful education at our lovely public elementary school. Close Quote
