Summary

Marina del Rey Middle is a public school serving about 300 students in grades 6-8 within the Los Angeles Unified district, but it faces significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom quarter of all California middle schools with proficiency rates well below state averages.

The school's most pressing issue is chronic absenteeism, with over 40% of students missing too much school, which is more than double the rate of many nearby schools like Mark Twain Middle and Palms Middle. Academically, Marina del Rey Middle has the lowest proficiency rates in English, math, and science among its comparison schools, with math scores dropping sharply from 6th to 7th grade.

A particularly interesting comparison is with ICEF Vista Middle Academy, a charter school less than a mile away that serves a similarly economically disadvantaged student population but achieves much higher test scores and has far better attendance, despite spending less per student. This contrast, along with the fact that Marina del Rey Middle spends nearly $39,000 per student—the highest in the area—suggests that factors like school culture, instructional quality, and effective use of resources are critical for student success.

Open Quote My two kids were in the Marine Science Academy and had an excellent education. The teachers were great! There were a lot of hands-on activities and real-life problem solving. The students did a lot of research at the creek and at the beach and learned how to become stewards of the environment. One of my kids is going to grad school and the other will be in college majoring in engineering. They were not bullied, but maybe because I did not allow them to be on social media and have always kept in touch with the teachers (who are terrific)! The principal is very supportive. The district, however, is not as supportive as it should be!
By the way, I know Marina teachers have also sent their children to Marina. That says a lot about a school! Close Quote

Open Quote The Performing Arts Magnet is horrible. With the exception of a few teachers who care, the leadership is lacking and there is nothing done to address bullying and fights. The principal is a joke and has been removed at least once, if not more, after a parent went to the district about her child being physically hurt and the school did nothing. Just search youtube for Marina Del Rey Middle School fights and you will see the type of stuff that goes on. It also misrepresents itself as a performing arts school, whereas it's just really a regular school that has a couple dance classes and some kids play instruments. I really regret my child going here and would not recommend this school to anyone. Close Quote
