Summary

Sierra House Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 418 students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, performing solidly in the middle tier of California elementary schools.

Academically, the school has notable strengths, particularly in mathematics and science where it consistently outperforms both the district and state averages. It also shows strong support for specific student groups, such as those in special education. While serving a student population with significant economic need, similar to nearby Bijou Community and Tahoe Valley Elementary, Sierra House achieves better academic results in core subjects. However, a major challenge is chronic absenteeism, with a rate higher than the state average, which is known to impact student learning. This is an area where the school differs from higher-performing Meyers Elementary, which has much lower absenteeism.

Overall, Sierra House Elementary has demonstrated steady improvement over the past decade and appears effective in its instructional practices, especially for the community it serves. To reach the next level, the school will need to address attendance challenges and continue building on its literacy instruction to match its success in math and science.

Open Quote This school is a true model school. It takes the love and support from the principal, teachers, and involved parents to make a school great, and this one is it! Kids that attend here are not only happy to attend daily, but each day in enriching just from the very fact that the energy is so positive and strong here. Here, kids are treated as little people who matter our next generation of thoughtful, thinking, and caring leaders. You can't find this in the majority of public schools today, sadly.
