Summary

Fremont Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 482 students in the Antioch Unified district, situated in a high-need community where about three-quarters of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 2-4% of all California elementary schools over the past decade. Proficiency rates in English, math, and science are well below both district and state averages, and a major concern is chronic absenteeism, with nearly 40% of students missing too much school—more than double the state average. This high rate of absenteeism is closely mirrored at nearby Marsh Elementary, suggesting shared community factors. While Fremont Elementary spends more per student than several other schools in the district, including higher-performing ones like Muir (John) Elementary, these resources have not yet translated into stronger academic outcomes.

Notable contrasts exist with local charter schools, such as Antioch Charter Academy and Antioch Charter Academy II, which report dramatically lower absenteeism and higher test scores while often spending less per student. Performance also varies greatly between grade levels at Fremont, with fifth-grade math scores being particularly low. Addressing the attendance crisis appears to be the most immediate priority for creating a foundation for academic improvement.

Open Quote Given the transient nature of the students and the disadvantages students have before walking through the door (including lack of parent support either through inability or incapacity), teachers at Fremont have done an amazing job. Students are advancing in spite of decreased budget, programs, parent involvement etc. Maybe if programs were funded and teachers did not have to fund their own classrooms and work 12+ hours daily, more progress could be made. Maybe those reviewing and commenting on SchoolDigger should do something about that and put their efforts to a good, logical use. Close Quote
