Summary

A. J. Dorsa Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 284 students in San Jose's Alum Rock Union Elementary district, but it faces significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 4-5% of all California elementary schools.

The school's proficiency rates in English, math, and science are well below state and district averages, and it has shown a concerning long-term decline from a middling ranking a decade ago. A major challenge is chronic absenteeism, with over 27% of students missing too much school, a rate higher than many nearby schools like Sylvia Cassell Elementary (15.3%) and significantly above the state average. This high absenteeism is closely linked to lower academic performance.

Interestingly, other local schools with similar student demographics achieve much stronger results, suggesting improvement is possible. For example, charter schools like Rocketship Los Suenos Academy and Adelante Dual Language Academy II report much higher math proficiency and lower absenteeism. Despite spending a similar amount per student as these higher-performing schools, Dorsa's outcomes lag, raising questions about how resources are used to support student learning.

Open Quote I was a student at this school for 5 years. My first few years I loved this school, but after 4th grade I hated it because I got bullied in 4th grade and kept getting bullied after that. In 5th grade, I moved to Visalia and I was so glad I left Dorsa. Another reason I hated 4th grade was because of the new principal. She was terrible. I'm so glad I left. Close Quote
