Maxine O Bush Elementary School

Public Grades PK, KG-8
Summary

Maxine O Bush Elementary School is a public school serving grades PK-8 in the Roosevelt Elementary District in Phoenix, Arizona, with a student population of 262 that is predominantly Hispanic (73.66%) and African American (18.32%).

Despite having relatively high per-student spending of $16,009, Maxine O Bush Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state averages on standardized tests, with significantly lower proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics across all grade levels. The school's performance is particularly concerning for African American, Hispanic, and Special Education students, who rank in the bottom 25% of Arizona elementary schools. Additionally, the school has had relatively high dropout rates in recent years, ranging from 0.0% to 0.9%, which is higher than the state average.

Interestingly, the nearby Valley View School and V.H. Lassen Elementary, which also struggle academically, generally perform better than Maxine O Bush. This suggests that the school faces significant challenges in improving student achievement and overall performance, and may benefit from targeted instructional support, increased resources for underperforming subgroups, and a strategic plan for school turnaround and long-term sustainability.

Open Quote I recently had a substitute position at this school. I have a been a teacher for quite some time and have never been treated with such disrespect from a class. By the end of the day I had kicked out 8 students. I saw teachers from other classrooms constantly using classroom management and this takes away from teaching time. The administrators weren't anywhere to be found and the Behavior Specialist basically has his hands tied and is not allowed to administer real discipline. One example, if a student is disrespectful, they are back in class the very next day like nothing ever happened. The students aren't held responsible for their actions. The students are the ones that run this school. Close Quote
