Summary

Tabasco Elementary is a PK-5 school in La Joya, TX, serving 544 students within the La Joya Independent School District (Isd), where over 90% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has a standout strength in Spanish-language reading, consistently outperforming both the district and state by wide margins—for example, in 2025-2026, 4th graders achieved a 64.71% proficiency rate in Spanish Reading, nearly double the district average and far exceeding nearby schools like Narciso Cavazos (48.28%) and Dr Maria Palmira Mendiola Elementary (single digits). This points to a highly effective bilingual program that builds strong foundational literacy in students' native language.

However, the school faces notable challenges. Mathematics is a persistent weakness, especially in 4th grade, where only 28.17% of students were proficient in 2025-2026—a staggering 18-point gap below the district average and 21 points below the state. This contrasts sharply with its reading success and suggests a disconnect between the strong Spanish literacy program and math instruction. Additionally, male student performance has dropped dramatically, from the 75th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 34th percentile in 2025-2026, while female students have remained stable. This widening gender gap is a key area for the school to address.

Despite these issues, Tabasco has historically been a solid performer, earning 3-star ratings for four consecutive years before a dip to 2 stars in 2025-2026. It excels at supporting low-income students, ranking in the 86th percentile statewide for this subgroup in 2023-2024. For context, nearby Sam Fordyce Elementary serves an even more disadvantaged population but achieves higher overall rankings, suggesting there are lessons to be learned. Overall, Tabasco offers a unique bilingual strength but needs to improve math instruction and address the decline in boys' performance to regain its upward trajectory.
