Sharyland High School

Summary:

Sharyland High School is a public high school located in Mission, Texas, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,546 students. The school is part of the Sharyland Independent School District, which is ranked 182 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Sharyland High School stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, with proficiency rates on STAAR End-of-Course (EOC) exams exceeding the state and district averages in most subject areas. For example, in 2022-2023, the school had 74% proficiency in English I Reading, compared to the state average of 54%. The school also maintains high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 97.4% to 98.7% over the past five years, which are significantly higher than the state and nearby school averages. Additionally, Sharyland High School has very low dropout rates, ranging from 0.0% to 0.3% over the past five years, lower than the state and nearby school averages.

While Sharyland High School serves a predominantly Hispanic student population (93.73%), it has relatively low percentages of other racial/ethnic groups, such as White and African American students. This raises questions about the school's efforts to promote racial diversity and equity. Furthermore, the school has a relatively high percentage of students (56.79%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Compared to nearby schools, such as Veterans Memorial High School and Mission High School, Sharyland High School generally outperforms them in academic metrics like test scores and graduation rates, suggesting it may be more effective in supporting student achievement. However, the school's racial and socioeconomic demographics warrant further examination to ensure equitable access and support for all students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has been the worst to deal with in regards to attendance! My oldest daughter was highly involved in church as she served as the Regional Leader for the South Central region. With this leadership role, my daughter was involved with creating spiritual retreats 4x a year that involved 150-400 youth members from CO, NM, TX, OK, SD, KS. SHS did not recognize her role nor involvement with church and would not pre-approve any missed days. Even with a letter from the Director of our church. They said her involvement was not recognized as a Holy Day and would marked all her missed absences as unexcused. In addition, they are not giving credit to my Junior student due to attendance. My Junior student had Dr's orders to stay home as she was dx with hand foot & mouth which is highly contagious. So in order to avoid further contamination, we kept her quarantined at home for 4 days (Dr's orders were for 7 days). My daughter had 1 more absence, and now is currently not getting credit for classes that she has successfully completed. SHS states that no credit will be issued if 90 of school is not attended regardless of approved or not approved attendance. They have not been willing to work with us and just state that although the class was completed, my daughter will not be getting credit! This is absolutely ridiculous as my kids have been excellent students and excel academically. I am appalled that Religious Leadership roles outside of school are not recognized and were counted against my oldest.. and that Dr orders to stay home counted against my Junior student. The staff at SHS was neither willing or able to work with us on these matters as they stated that the State of TX requires ALL students to be at school for 90 of the time or NO CREDIT will be given. After further investigation on the state of TX attendance policy, I have found this to not be true, however SHS will not comply with anything else. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
