Summary

Bonham Academy is a public PK-8 school in downtown San Antonio, TX, serving 713 students as part of the San Antonio Independent School District (Isd), and stands out for its unique ability to offer high school-level courses to its middle school students. The school’s most impressive feature is its performance on advanced End-of-Course (EOC) exams: over the last three years, students have achieved a near-perfect 96-100% proficiency in English I Reading—roughly double the state average—and 71-90% proficiency in Algebra I, far exceeding the state average of 45-54%. No other nearby elementary school offers these advanced exams, making Bonham a powerful option for academic acceleration, especially when compared to the Young Women's Leadership Academy Pri, which only serves grades PK-5 and cannot provide this opportunity.

Bonham also excels in bilingual education, with Spanish-language STAAR math scores significantly higher than district and state averages—for example, 5th-grade Spanish Math students achieved an 80% proficiency rate in 2025-2026. The school has a moderate poverty rate of about 65% of students on free/reduced lunch, which is notably lower than its immediate neighbors like Bowden Academy (96%) and J T Brackenridge Elementary (98%). This demographic difference helps explain why Bonham consistently outperforms the district average in nearly every subject and grade level, ranking in the 34th percentile statewide after peaking at the 53rd percentile in 2023-2024.

However, the school faces a significant challenge known as the "middle school math cliff": while elementary math scores are strong, 7th-grade math proficiency has dropped to as low as 0% in recent years, far below state and district averages. Additionally, Bonham struggles with equity gaps, as its Low Socio-Economic Status students ranked in the 19th percentile and Special Education students in the 9th percentile in recent years. Despite these issues, the school’s Gifted & Talented program has historically ranked in the 57th-70th percentile, and its overall performance remains a bright spot within the district, though the recent downturn in 2025-2026 warrants attention from parents considering this school.

Open Quote This once was a very good school, and once had an excellent dual-language program. But this is no longer true. The bilingual program doesn't work for anybody. The English speakers don't learn Spanish. The Spanish speakers don't succeed in learning high levels of English. If you want your children to learn Spanish, there are better options. If you don't care about your kids learning Spanish and just want them in a good program, it's better to send them to a high quality English program. The leadership at SAISD does not care about maintaining a high quality dual-language program, so the educators at the school don't either. Why waste time and your child's opportunities at a good education. Close Quote

Open Quote The Spanish Language Immersion program is phenomenal. Also, it's no longer Bonham Elementary but Bonham Academy and it goes to 8th grade.

This is one of the SAISD innercity elementary level success stories. Close Quote
