Summary

Stevens High School in San Antonio, TX, is a large comprehensive high school in the Northside Independent School District (Isd) serving over 2,500 students in grades 9-12, with a high percentage of students from low socio-economic backgrounds. The school has consistently ranked in the lower-middle tier of Texas high schools, earning a 2-star rating from Schooldigger, and its graduation rate has hovered around 89-90%, below the district average of 93-94%.

The most significant challenge at Stevens is persistent underperformance in Algebra I, with only 34% of students proficient in the 2025-2026 school year, compared to the state average of 54%. This is a chronic issue, as proficiency was just 15% the prior year, the lowest among comparable schools in the district. In contrast, Biology is a relative strength, with 72% of students proficient, above the state average. The school also has a higher dropout rate (2.2%) than the district (0.9%) and nearby higher-performing schools like Taft High School (0.3%) and Brennan High School (0.2%).

Performance varies significantly by student group. African American and Multi-racial students have shown strong improvement, ranking in the 60th and 65th percentiles statewide. However, Asian students ranked in the bottom 9th percentile, and Gifted and Talented students ranked in the 27th percentile, suggesting the school may not be adequately challenging its highest-achieving students. Overall, Stevens has been unable to break out of a performance plateau over the past decade, oscillating between the 35th and 46th percentile, while nearby schools like Taft and Brennan consistently perform higher. This stagnation suggests systemic changes may be needed to alter the school's academic path.

Open Quote Teacher turnover is constant. Students report having had teachers give up in frustration and walk out of the classroom. The philosophy renders teachers ineffective and easy prey if failure rates exceed 10%. Students are very aware that teachers, not them, get in trouble if too many failing students exists. So, it has fostered an atmosphere of complacency and a lot of waiting until the end to do any work. At this school, teachers work for the students not the other way around.

As an educator, this is where your dreams come to die. Close Quote
