Summary

Taft High School in San Antonio, TX, is a large comprehensive high school serving 2,670 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Northside Independent School District (Isd), and it has recently rebounded to a 4-star rating after a period of decline.

Taft stands out for its exceptional graduation rate of 98.8% (2023-2024), which is higher than nearby top performers like Brandeis High School (95.3%) and O'Connor High School (97.8%), and its dropout rate of just 0.3% is among the lowest in the area. The school also excels in core subjects like Biology (78.52% proficient), English II Reading (73.6%), and U.S. History (79.51%), all exceeding district and state averages. However, a persistent weakness is Algebra I, where only 36.97% of students are proficient—far below the district average of 53.43%. This is a key area for parents to ask about, as it may affect college readiness.

While Taft has shown a strong overall rebound, performance for English Language Learner (ELL) students has dropped sharply to a 1-star rating, a red flag that suggests the school's recent improvements may not be reaching this group. In contrast, Special Education students have improved to a 4-star rating. Compared to Marshall High School and Stevens High School, Taft serves a more economically advantaged population, with only 33.18% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Overall, Taft is a solid choice for families who prioritize high graduation rates and strong performance in most subjects, but the Algebra I gap and ELL challenges warrant further investigation.
