Southgate Elementary

Public Grades
Summary

Southgate Elementary is a public elementary school in Garland, Texas, serving 227 students in grades 3-5. The school is part of the Garland Independent School District, which is ranked 535 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Southgate Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools. The school's performance on STAAR tests is significantly below the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas, particularly in mathematics. For example, in 2023-2024, the percentage of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in STAAR Reading was 25.81%, compared to the district's 49.39% and the state's 48.85%. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, ranging from 89.31% to 92.23% in recent years, is likely a contributing factor to its academic struggles.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Daugherty Elementary, Watson Technology Center, and Park Crest Elementary, generally perform better academically than Southgate Elementary, with higher proficiency rates on STAAR tests and higher overall rankings. These schools also have lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students, suggesting that the higher spending per student at Southgate Elementary is not necessarily translating into better academic outcomes.

Open Quote The principal at this school does not oversee his teachers well. The teachers basically ignore parental requests and even doctors notes. There is very little parental involvment. Much is made about teaching the english language. Little is made about actually teaching anything else. Close Quote
