Summary

Maudrie Walton Elementary is a PK-5 public school in the Fort Worth Independent School District (Isd) serving 271 students in a high-poverty area, where over 94% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has a history of very low academic performance, ranking in the 2nd percentile statewide for the 2025-2026 school year—its lowest rank in three years and a sharp decline from a brief period of improvement in 2022-2023. This recent drop is more severe than nearby schools like Christene C. Moss Elementary (52nd percentile) and Maude I. Logan Elementary (54th percentile), both of which serve similar demographics but achieve much higher outcomes.

A critical concern is the school's performance in 5th Grade Science, where 0% of students were proficient in the 2024-2025 school year, a pattern of consistent failure over multiple years. While other nearby schools like Eastern Hills Elementary and West Handley Elementary also struggle in science, Maudrie Walton's inability to achieve any proficiency over several years points to a systemic instructional challenge. The school also shows inconsistent performance across student groups; for example, in 2023-2024, Hispanic students performed at the 53rd percentile while low socio-economic status students were at the 25th percentile, suggesting uneven effectiveness in serving all students.

Despite these challenges, there are glimmers of hope. In 2022-2023, 5th Grade Math proficiency reached 56%, well above district and state averages, showing the school has the capacity for high performance. Additionally, the school spends $15,038 per student—higher than many peers like Sagamore Hill Elementary ($10,879) and Sunrise - McMillan Elementary ($12,225)—and has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 14.2:1. This suggests that funding and class size are not the primary issues; rather, the focus should be on improving instructional quality and sustaining successful strategies, as demonstrated by the stark contrast with Christene C. Moss Elementary, which achieves strong results with a nearly identical student population.

Open Quote We made a serious mistake when we allowed our son to go to this school. The new principal has actually brought the test scores down. We don't even know how that could be possible. No discipline in the halls or classrooms. We wish we knew what we could do to help, but from what we've seen outside help is not wanted. Close Quote
