Summary

Webb Middle is a public middle school in Austin, TX, serving 502 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Austin Independent School District (Isd), and it has consistently ranked in the bottom 2% of Texas middle schools for the past five years, with over 98% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch.

Webb Middle faces extreme and persistent academic challenges, with proficiency rates in core subjects like Reading and Mathematics drastically lower than both the district and state averages. For example, in the 2025-2026 school year, only 4.27% of 6th graders were proficient in Reading, compared to 40.93% at nearby General Marshall Middle and 83.87% at Kealing Middle. The school also has a high and rising dropout rate, which was 3.9% in the 2023-2024 school year—more than double the district average of 1.9%. This rate has been volatile, peaking at 5.8% in 2022-2023, and is a much more severe issue than at other low-performing schools like Dobie Middle (7.5%) and Burnet Middle (4.2%).

Despite these struggles, there is a notable bright spot: students who take the Algebra I End-of-Course exam perform relatively well, with 52.63% proficient in 2024-2025, outperforming the district (42.55%) and the state (47.01%). This suggests the school effectively accelerates a small group of students, but the majority are left behind in foundational math skills. Additionally, Webb Middle spends a significant amount per student ($13,348), which is higher than high-performing schools like Lamar Middle ($9,174) and Kealing Middle ($9,762), indicating that the challenge is not just funding but how resources are deployed to overcome the immense challenges associated with extreme poverty.

Open Quote I would like to say that Webb Middle School is the BEST school ever. My family and I moved here to Austin in 2012 from Memphis,TN. Our son is a special needs child and the Life Skills Program at Webb is AWESOME!!! They have been really superb with our son. He loves going to school and can't wait until summer vacation is over. He has been in the Special Needs class since second grade in Memphis. I have to say that they need to come and learn how to teach children with special needs. They could learn alot from the staff here. Our son has been in speech class since first grade and didn't make much progress while in Memphis. We come to Austin and he has graduated out of speech class is first year here and he did it before Christmas break. AWESOME JOB WEBB!! The teachers and the staff at Webb Middle School are excellent with the kids and parent too. Our son has vast improvements while at Webb and for only one year may I add. I am so proud of him and the staff at Webb Middle School. GO WEBB GO WEBB GO WEBB GO WEBB!!!!!!!!!! Close Quote
