Summary

Bussey Elementary in Houston, TX, is a 1st through 5th grade campus in the Aldine Independent School District (Isd) serving 489 students, with over 90% qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and it is currently in the midst of a powerful transformation from a historically low-performing school to a rising middle-tier school.

Bussey Elementary has achieved a remarkable turnaround, climbing from the 5th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 50th percentile in 2025-2026, earning a 3-star rating. This upward trajectory is unmatched by nearby schools like Thompson Elementary, which is consistently high-performing (75th percentile), or Stehlik Elementary, which remains low-performing (12th percentile). A key strength is the school's exceptional growth for its economically disadvantaged students, ranking in the 70th percentile statewide for this subgroup. Bussey also shows strong performance in Spanish-language assessments, often surpassing both the district and state averages in 4th and 5th-grade Reading and Math, suggesting a robust bilingual program. A notable pattern is the "Bussey Bounce," where 3rd-grade scores often start below the district average but accelerate significantly by 4th and 5th grade, frequently exceeding district and state benchmarks.

Despite these gains, Bussey faces challenges. Science remains a critical weakness, with only 14.86% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025, far below the state average. Additionally, there is a significant gender gap, with male students ranking in the 57th percentile and female students in the 38th percentile. The most interesting comparison is with nearby Thompson Elementary, which serves a nearly identical high-poverty population but outperforms Bussey in nearly every subject. This proximity highlights the potential for Bussey to continue its upward climb by studying successful practices at Thompson, particularly in 4th and 5th-grade Math. For parents, Bussey represents a school that is effectively closing the achievement gap for its primary demographic, with a clear focus on growth and improvement.

Open Quote I'm starting to get really frustrated with this school faculty (Bussey Elementary) and the assistance principle. I don't know what to do and I feel like there harassing me over any little thing. I normally pick my 2 sons up from there bus stop and dropping them off in the mornings or they take the bus in the morning. But now my husband needs me to drive him to work and pick him up because his license is suspended. He gets off at different times usually at around 5 pm but for the last 4 months its been around 2-3:30pm.

I had switched to car rider then after 3rd time of me picking them up late. And I was only like 10-15 minutes late. I have to pick my husband up from work (in Jersey Village) then afterwards pick the boys up from school. I usually always make it just on time or if not earlier. After that 3rd time the Assistant principle pulled me a side and said all this stuff about that the teachers have things to do and that they can't be staying late because the parents are showing up late all the time. I told her I understand and that I think I'll switch the bus rider like that I will have more time. She also said that if this keeps happening that they will send a police officer to my apartment to see if I still live there. I was in shock and that's not even the worse.

After that everything was great! I was picking them up on time from school. Then again I didn't make it on time and only this time my husband went in to pick them up in the front office and this time they held my husband for like half an hour threatening that next time his late that there going to call CPS on us and say that, what we're doing is child abandonment. That was just a low blow now there trying to get personal. I don't think that was ever necessary to say something like that unless I was lets showing up 3 hours late but a few minutes to 15 minute is not child abandonment!!! So at the point I was enraged didn't know what else to do and how they think they can harassing and bully me like that is confusing in itself. I don't know my rights as a parent. I feel like the school faculty is against the parents.

I can't just take them out of the school and pick another school. So I switched to bus rider and I knows some days I'm not going to be able to get the kids on time off the bus. So I sometimes have to just go to the school directly and pick them up early. After a few times once again the AP pulled aside to talk to me about the next time I pick them up early that they will give me a ticket because its like no attendance. Can you believe that?? First they said there going to send a police to my apartment then threaten to call CPS on me and now there going to ticket me for pick them up early. I told the AP that I don't know what they want me to do. I told her if I don't pick them up early, the bus driver will drop them off and no one will be there to let them in my apartment.

Therefore a danger to my children safety but they don't care. Because the way they look at it, once the kids leave the school on the bus, the school is no longer responsible. They care more about them not getting sued and what is inconvenience to the teachers.

I don't know who I should talk to. Should I get a lawyer involved. I'm thinking of talking to some else that is in charge more higher up. Close Quote
