Summary

Ps 40 Augustus Saint-Gaudens is a highly performing elementary school in the Gramercy Park/Stuyvesant Town area of Manhattan, serving 538 students in grades PK through 5 within the New York City Geographic District # 2.

This school stands out for its remarkable consistency, ranking in the top 5% of all New York State elementary schools for the past ten years. In the 2024-2025 school year, it ranked 153rd out of 2,445 schools statewide. This stability is rare; for comparison, Ps 116 Mary Lindley Murray (0.65 miles away) dropped from the 86th percentile to the 47th percentile over a similar period. Ps 40 also achieves top-tier results while spending significantly less per student ($27,725) than nearby peers like Sixth Avenue Elementary School ($32,153) and 47 American Sign Language And English Lower School (The) ($82,485).

One of the school's most impressive strengths is its effectiveness with economically disadvantaged students, who rank in the 90th percentile statewide. This is a stark contrast to nearby high-poverty schools like Ps 34 Franklin D Roosevelt (99.5% poverty, 12th percentile) and Ps 64 Robert Simon (84.4% poverty, 20th percentile). However, parents should note a "science gap"—while the school crushes state averages in 5th-grade science, it only slightly outperforms its own district. Additionally, the nearby Success Academy Charter School-Union Square (0.31 miles away) achieves even higher proficiency rates (e.g., 97% in 3rd-grade math) while serving a more economically diverse student body, offering an interesting alternative for families.

Open Quote I am a former parent. This school is a wonderful place. The principal and vice principal know every child by name. At graduation, no list of names was needed. There is a real sense of community here among the teachers, students and parents. The parents are very involved. The teachers are really good. We had a great experience at P.S. 40. Close Quote

Open Quote i really like PS 40. The teacher my son has is VERY active in my child's education and makes herself available to both myself and my son whenever I need her. I feel the school is a gift and a blessing. Close Quote
