Summary

Lafayette Middle School serves 420 students in grades 7–8 in Oxford, Mississippi, and is part of the Lafayette County School District, one of the state's top-ranked districts at 6th out of 134. The school earned a 4-star rating and ranked 44th among 260 Mississippi middle schools in 2025–2026, a strong rebound from the prior year's 3-star showing, though still below its 2023–2024 peak of 29th. With a 10.5:1 student-teacher ratio, Lafayette offers the smallest class sizes among nearby middle schools, compared with 13.1:1 at Oxford Middle School and 13.7:1 at Oxford Intermediate School.

Math is Lafayette's clear strength. In 2025–2026, roughly 75% of 7th graders and 67% of 8th graders scored proficient in math, well above state averages, while Algebra I end-of-course proficiency has historically reached 98–100%. English Language Arts is the main weak spot, with proficiency in the mid-40s across both grades. Seventh-grade test scores are nearly identical to those at Oxford Middle School, but Oxford pulls ahead sharply in 8th grade — a 14-point gap in ELA and a 5-point gap in math. Science scores are strong at 62.1% proficient, though still about 11 points behind Oxford Middle School.

Attendance is a major success story. Chronic absenteeism has fallen from 25.6% in 2021–2022 to just 12.9%, better than both Oxford schools and well under the state average of 23.9%. Lafayette Middle School also serves a higher share of economically disadvantaged students (54.3% free/reduced lunch) than nearby Oxford schools, yet still delivers competitive results. For families, the school offers a strong math foundation, attentive staffing, and improving attendance — the main question is whether it can close the 8th-grade reading gap and sustain its recent momentum.
