Summary

Worcester East Middle is a grade 6–8 school at 420 Grafton Street in Worcester, MA, serving 731 students as one of the district’s four large middle schools. The Worcester district ranks in the bottom tier of Massachusetts (304th of 351), and Worcester East ranks 399th of 478 statewide—17th percentile, 1 star. It has spent most of the last decade in the bottom fifth of the state, with a modest recovery from a 0-star, 9th-percentile low in 2020–21, but the last two years slipped from the 19th to the 17th percentile, suggesting improvement has plateaued.

On 2025–26 MCAS, the school posts the lowest proficiency of any Worcester middle school in every subject: 22.11% ELA, 13.32% math, and 19.88% science. It trails the district and sits well below the state, with math the starkest gap—about 1 in 8 students proficient, nearly 11 points behind the district and almost 28 behind Massachusetts. Nearby comparisons are dramatic: Oak Middle School has 67.62% math proficiency, roughly five times the school’s rate, while Sherwood Middle School, Grafton Middle, Mountview Middle, and Mill Pond School also far outpace it. Leicester Middle is the only nearby school in a similar band. The school also spends more per pupil—$18,124 in 2020–21—than every comparison school, yet posts the lowest results; its student-teacher ratio of 14.3 is the highest among Worcester middle schools and jumped from 12.5 in one year.

Performance inside the school varies by grade. Eighth graders are close to district averages in ELA and science, while sixth graders are 14–15 points behind in both; seventh-grade math (10.34%) is the weakest result. English learners rank at the 66th percentile and students experiencing homelessness at the 76th—well above the school’s overall 17th percentile—suggesting strengths. Low-income students (29th percentile) and special education students (16th) still lag. Bottom line: the school is a persistently low-ranked urban middle school with modest ELA and science momentum, no math progress in four years, and internal unevenness. Families should ask how math instruction and the sixth-to-seventh-grade transition are being addressed, and what is working for English learners and homeless students that might be extended to the general population.
