Summary

Mamou Elementary School is a PK-4 school in Mamou, LA, serving 392 students within the Evangeline Parish school district, where nearly 79% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Mamou Elementary’s standout strength is its exceptional and consistent math performance, with 75% of students proficient in math for the 2025-2026 school year—well above the district (61%) and state (62%) averages. This marks the fourth consecutive year the school has maintained a math proficiency rate of 75% or higher, a level of sustained excellence unmatched by nearby schools like W. W. Stewart Elementary (76% math proficiency but less consistency). The school also keeps chronic absenteeism low at 17.9%, significantly better than the district average of 25.1% and far below struggling peers like Ville Platte Elementary (39.5%) and Eunice Elementary (35.0%). However, social studies is a persistent weakness, with only 50% of students proficient—below the state average of 55%—suggesting a need for targeted curriculum improvements.

While the school’s overall ranking has dipped from the 83rd percentile in 2023-2024 to the 57th percentile in 2025-2026, it still outperforms many high-poverty schools in the area, such as Glendale Elementary (1 star, 13th percentile). A bright spot is the dramatic turnaround for special education students, who rose from the bottom 6th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 60th percentile in 2025-2026, reflecting effective interventions. Compared to East Elementary in St. Landry Parish, which has a similar poverty rate (86%) and test score profile, Mamou Elementary shows that strong math instruction and low absenteeism can help overcome socioeconomic challenges.
