Summary

McKinley Senior High School in Baton Rouge, LA, is a public high school serving 669 students in grades 9-12 as part of the East Baton Rouge Parish school district, where over 71% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has faced significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 20% of Louisiana high schools for nearly a decade and earning a 1-star rating for nine consecutive years. Its graduation rate has stagnated around 63%, which is over 20 points below the state average, and chronic absenteeism affects nearly 59% of students—more than 2.5 times the state average. This stands in stark contrast to nearby high-performing schools like Baton Rouge Magnet High School and Liberty High School, which have single-digit chronic absenteeism rates and serve far fewer students from low-income households.

Despite these struggles, McKinley has a remarkable bright spot: its exceptional performance with English Language Learners (ELL). In the 2025-2026 school year, the school ranked in the 63rd percentile statewide for serving ELL students, earning a 3-star rating—a dramatic improvement from the 14th percentile just two years prior. This is a unique strength not seen in nearby schools, including Baton Rouge Magnet High School, which does not report data for this subgroup. The school also shows a notable split in test scores, with proficiency in English II (50%) and Biology (47%) closer to district averages, while math proficiency in Algebra I (27%) and Geometry (28%) is roughly half the district average.

An interesting paradox is McKinley's student-teacher ratio, which has dropped to an incredibly low 10.9:1—even lower than the high-performing Baton Rouge Magnet High School (17.6:1). Yet, academic outcomes have not improved, suggesting that challenges like chronic absenteeism and student engagement are deeper issues than staffing alone. The school's stagnant trajectory over the past decade, with no clear upward trend, underscores the difficulty of breaking out of a low-performance cycle. However, the success with ELL students provides a data-driven proof point that positive change is possible, and replicating those strategies could be key to addressing the school's most critical issues.
